Diego Galar elected new Chair of European maintenance federation
Diego Galar, Professor at Luleå University of Technology, has been elected Chair of EFNMS (European Federation of National Maintenance Societies), a key European body in the field of industrial maintenance and asset management. The election took place during the General Assembly held in Vilnius on May 11.
EFNMS is the umbrella organization representing over 20 national maintenance societies across Europe, including associations from Sweden, Germany, France, Spain, the Netherlands, and Italy. The federation promotes excellence in industrial maintenance, reliability engineering, condition monitoring, and asset management.
“This is an important technical and institutional role. My task will be to coordinate efforts in standardization, professional development, benchmarking, and knowledge dissemination across Europe,” says Diego Galar, Professor at Luleå University of Technology.
As Chair, he also wants to highlight the broader societal mission of maintenance.
“Maintenance often happens behind the scenes, but it’s essential to keeping critical infrastructure safe, reliable, and sustainable. By improving how we care for assets, we reduce energy consumption, extend equipment life, and minimize waste,” he says.
EFNMS is closely linked to the EU’s research and innovation agenda and collaborates with international partners. The chairmanship strengthens Luleå University of Technology’s visibility at the European level, particularly in areas like digital transformation, smart maintenance, and the transition to Industry 5.0 – with its focus on human-centric, resilient, and sustainable operations.
“We also aim to increase engagement across generations and borders – empowering young professionals, expanding inclusion, and ensuring our expertise contributes to European policy and innovation,” says Diego Galar.
