The switch from Outlook Classic to New Outlook
Outlook Classic will eventually be replaced with New Outlook, but Classic is supported until 2029.
New Outlook was released for general use in August 2024, and the intention is to eventually phase out Outlook Classic.
Since there is a need for some to run both versions side by side during the transition, Outlook Classic will remain available and supported until 2029.
Legacy Outlook on Mac, however, will no longer be supported as of October 2025.
Upcoming Changes
In May 2025, Microsoft will change how the toggle to switch from New Outlook to Outlook Classic works. Instead of closing New Outlook, it will be minimized. Shortly thereafter, in June/July, the ability to launch New Outlook without closing Outlook Classic will be rolled out. This way, you can easily run both applications side by side and compare the differences.
In January 2026, Microsoft will make New Outlook the default for all users, but it will still be possible to switch back to Outlook Classic.
