New park environment takes shape
A new activity and recreation area is taking shape at Luleå Campus. Akademiska Hus is now transforming the entrance park – colloquially known as Pussen – into a safe, accessible and health-promoting space for students, staff and visitors alike.
The goal is to create a park environment that invites both relaxation and social interaction, all year round. The project is partly based on input from students and employees at Luleå University of Technology, and aims to strengthen the campus as an attractive and inclusive place where education, leisure and culture converge.
“We want to create an environment that makes it easy to stop, meet and enjoy - in the middle of everyday life on campus. By combining nature, function and art, we hope that the place will become a natural part of life here,” says Rikard Paulsson, Head of Real Estate at Akademiska Hus.
The new design includes an entrance square, improved walkways, a wooden deck, new lighting, barbecue areas, additional seating options, three wind shelters and a bridge across the pond. Existing vegetation will be carefully preserved and complemented with plant species adapted to local conditions – all to support biodiversity.
The wind shelters are being constructed from wood and combine traditional craftsmanship with contemporary design. Together with the new lighting – designed to enhance atmosphere and safety during the darker seasons – they contribute to a warm and welcoming environment.
Art will also have a natural place in the park. In collaboration with the Public Art Agency Sweden and representatives from the university, artistic expression will be integrated throughout the area, helping to create a vibrant and reflective campus where art becomes part of everyday life.
The project is expected to be completed in October 2025.
