Now we take the next step – the strategic plan for 2026–2030 has been approved
At the Vice-Chancellor’s decision meeting on 1 September, Luleå University of Technology’s strategic plan for the period 2026–2030 was approved. The plan is a shared tool for all of us in working towards Vision 2030 and outlines how we will develop education, research, collaboration, and organisation over the coming years.
“We are facing rapid technological development combined with stronger competition for students and research funding. This is something we share with most Swedish universities. In addition, we also have the Future Campus Luleå (FCL), a challenging and important project that gives us the opportunity to create a new, modern and competitive campus in Luleå,” says Vice-Chancellor Birgitta Bergvall-Kåreborn.
“The new strategic plan helps us to meet these challenges while ensuring that we continue to contribute solutions to society’s major issues.”
Broad involvement behind the plan
The process of updating the plan began back in January. The work has engaged the whole University – from subject and departmental level to professional support functions, the Vice-Chancellor’s strategic council, and meetings with head of subjects. In June, proposals were presented to the University Board.
An important part of the update was to more clearly distinguish Vision 2030 from the strategic plan. Therefore, the University Board decided that the overall goals and main strategies should no longer be included in the plan. The vision expresses the University’s long-term identity and direction, while the strategic plan defines priorities and objectives for the coming five years.
Four focus areas
The plan is structured around four focus areas, each with its own objectives for the period 2026–2030:
- Innovating education
- Groundbreaking research
- Societal impact
- Organisational transformation
Among the prioritised initiatives are the integration of AI into both education and research, stronger support for students in their first year, a clearer international profile, and continued development of Future Campus Luleå. Within the organisational focus area, issues of culture are also highlighted, where trust, courage and closeness are guiding principles for collaboration between academia and professional support.
A plan for all of us
The strategic plan is our shared foundation. It is intended to support everyday decisions and priorities, provide direction for planning and development, and help us collectively realise Vision 2030.
