About the Shanghai Ranking
The Shanghai Ranking, or Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU), is one of the world's most established university rankings, published annually since 2003. It covers more than 2,500 universities, but only the top 1,000 are listed. The focus is on research and the ranking is based on criteria such as scientific publications, citations, publications in highly regarded journals such as Nature and Science, and international research collaborations. Nobel Prizes and other distinguished awards to alumni or researchers also influence the ranking.
