From five continents to Luleå – RaSiM 11 gathered the world around mine safety
In late August, Luleå became an international meeting place for mine safety. The 11th edition of the RaSiM conference brought together 200 participants from 22 countries and five continents – researchers, industry, entrepreneurs and decision-makers – to discuss how seismic risks in mining can be prevented and managed.
For three days, 200 participants from 22 countries and five continents – researchers, decision-makers, entrepreneurs and industry representatives – gathered to share knowledge on mine seismology and safety.
"We wanted to create a forum where stakeholders could interact and understand each other. Hosting the conference in Luleå was both an honour and a recognition of the work we do here at the university," says Savka Dineva, Professor at Luleå University of Technology and chair of the conference.
The programme featured 68 scientific presentations and concluded with technical visits to Swedish underground mines, where participants experienced safety practices in action.
Tristan Jones, Programme manager for Mine Development at LKAB.
LKAB, the main sponsor of the conference, emphasized the importance of research to meet the challenges of operating the world’s largest underground iron ore mines.
"The deeper we go, the more seismic events we face. We must support research and those working in this field, so that the mine remains a safe place to work," says Tristan Jones, Programme Manager for Mine Development at LKAB.
Smaller actors also highlighted the value of RaSiM as a meeting place.
"The technical stakeholders are here, but also the decision-makers. As a young company, we are starting to be recognized within this community," says Emil Svanberg, CEO of RockSigma.
The choice of Luleå as host city was no coincidence. Luleå University of Technology is internationally recognized in seismology and unique in covering the entire value chain of mining research – from geology and mining to rock mechanics and safety.
RaSiM 11 was organized by Luleå University of Technology in collaboration with Swedish industry partners.
