Nordic-Latin American meeting on sustainable mining in Luleå
Representatives from the mining industry, academia and authorities gathered at Luleå University of Technology for the international conference The Nordics and Latin America: Sustainable Mining on October 15-16, 2025. The focus was on how the industry can accelerate the transition towards decarbonization through electrification, hydrogen solutions and circular economy.
The conference, organized by Latnord in collaboration with Luleå University of Technology's Swedish School of Mines and CAMM, attracted participants from all over the Nordic region and Latin America, including Chile, Brazil, Peru, Mexico, Argentina and Ecuador.
"Holding the conference at Luleå University of Technology is significant. Here, the Swedish School of Mines and CAMM meet at the intersection of cutting-edge research and northern Sweden's industrial test beds", says Saeed Chelgani, Director of the Swedish School of Mines at Luleå University of Technology.

Participants also had the opportunity to visit the region's world-leading facilities, such as the Aitik mine and HYBRIT, to connect theory and practice.
"The region brings together a unique cluster of mining, equipment and metals companies, from LKAB and Boliden to Sandvik and our Nordic partners, making the conference a living laboratory for green transition," Chelgani continues.
With its Nordic-Latin American perspective and focus on practical solutions, the conference became a meeting place where ideas and technology move in both directions, a step towards a more sustainable global mining industry.
