Kristoffer Töyrä awarded Wagner Scholarship
Kristoffer Töyrä, alumnus of the Piteå School of Music at Luleå University of Technology, has been awarded the 2026 Bayreuth Scholarship by the Wagner-Society in Gothenburg.
At the singing competition, Kristoffer Töyrä sang “Come dal ciel” from Macbeth by Giuseppe Verdi and “Abentlich strahlt der Sonne Auge” from The Rhine Gold by Richard Wagner.
The jury's motivation:
“With a magnificent bass sound, great authority and blackened, free height, we expect a great career in the Wagnerian field.”
Kristoffer Töyrä was also awarded the “Audience Prize”.
The scholarship means participation in the Scholarship Week of the Bayreuth Festival in August 2026. He will join other young musicians on various study visits and will also receive tickets to three of the Festival's opera performances. Travel and subsistence expenses are included in the first prize winner's grant.
The jury consisted of Helena Döse, court singer, Göran Gademan, dramaturge and casting coordinator at the Gothenburg Opera, Annalena Persson, deputy artistic director and soloist director at the Gothenburg Opera, Maximilian Schattauer, music agent and Ann Christin Eriksson, chairperson of the Wagner-Society in Gothenburg. The pianists were Martin Andersson and Viktor Stener.
About the Wagner-Society
The aim of the Wagner-Society in Gothenburg is to spread knowledge of Richard Wagner's life and works and to organize social gatherings for its members. The Wagner-Society's singing competition for young Wagner singers is organized every year.
The Bayreuth Festival is a music festival held annually in Bayreuth, Germany. During the festival, theatrical works by the composer Richard Wagner are performed. The festival was first held in 1876 on Wagner's own initiative. Since 1951, it has been held annually in late July/early August.
Kristoffer Töyrä will sing at the University's Academic Ceremony.
