Several Luleå companies among Sweden's most innovative tech startups
Three companies with connections to Luleå University of Technology are on the list when the magazine Ny Teknik appoints this year's 33 most innovative Swedish technology startups 2025.
Remos Space Systems, Vimotek and Flasheye are the Luleå companies that are named some of Sweden's most innovative. All three companies have alumni from Luleå University of Technology.
Sensors and software for satellites
The company Vimotek develops technology that enables close operations between satellites in space, both simulation software and sensors.
”The 33 list has existed since 2008, and previously only two space companies have been included. Now there are two more and both are based in Luleå. It is great to see that the space industry is highlighted, we have a very exciting industry where a lot will happen in the future,” says Markus Sjölund, COO at Vimotek and former student of the Industrial Engineering and Management master’s program.
“At Vimotek, there are several alumni from Luleå University of Technology, including both former students and doctoral candidates. Four students in space engineering have written their master’s theses at Vimotek and were later hired, and one is currently doing their thesis work. In addition, there are collaborations with researchers in robotics.”
Controlling satellites on space missions
Remos Space Systems is also on the list and operates in the field of space technology. The company has simplified satellite communication through software that can control satellites using standard processors, a cheaper and simpler solution than previous systems. Remos Space Systems has customers in 16 different countries and experience with space missions.
All three founders of Remos Space Systems are alumni of Luleå University of Technology. Moses Browne Mwakyanjala holds a PhD in Space Technology, Petter Lindberg is a former student of the Master of Science in Space Engineering program, and Thilini Wijewarna Arachchi is a former student of the master’s program in International Business.
Understanding the environment with lasers
Flasheye has developed software for monitoring various environments using 3D lidar, which uses lasers to measure distances and interpret surroundings. The technology can be used in, for example, mining or traffic.
Both the founder, Ulf Lindström, and the CEO, Gustav Nordlund, are alumni of Luleå University of Technology, and many of the company’s employees have studied Industrial Engineering and Management, Engineering Physics, or Mechanical Engineering at Luleå University of Technology.
