New research project on Sami architecture in Kiruna
Luleå University of Technology and the Sami art institution Verdde are launching a new research initiative aimed at strengthening sustainable and inclusive urban development in Giron/Kiruna. With 4 million SEK in funding from Formas, researchers will explore how Sami perspectives can be integrated into future public architecture and spatial planning.
The project, Advancing Sami spatial planning through participatory design, is led by visiting professor Runa Johannessen together with professor Agatino Rizzo, head of subject at the Division of Architecture and Built Environment.
"This project allows us to generate knowledge that directly supports better decision-making in the built environment. Understanding Sami approaches to land, relationships and the environment give planners and architects tools for long-term sustainable development," says Agatino Rizzo, professor at Luleå University of Technology.
The work is linked to Oadjut – an initiative developed by Verdde that investigates how public architecture can be created on Sami terms, grounded in traditional knowledge and contemporary practice.
Together, the partners are developing guiding design principles that can benefit municipalities, planners and architects.
"The follow-up research helps document and strengthen how Sami knowledge can contribute to more sustainable and inclusive transformation processes. This is crucial in regions undergoing major change, such as Kiruna," says Runa Johannessen, visiting professor at Luleå University of Technology.
As part of the initiative, Luleå University of Technology and Verdde are announcing a two-year full-time postdoctoral position. The researcher will work closely with local actors, conduct fieldwork and contribute both scientific and artistic material – knowledge that can be used broadly in future urban development efforts.
