New European project uses AI to boost sustainable business innovation
Luleå University of Technology is participating in the European project AI4GreenBUS – Business Model Innovation with Artificial Intelligence for the Urgent Green Agenda: Educate to Innovate, an Erasmus+ Innovation Alliance initiative focused on accelerating the green and digital transition across Europe.
The project officially launched in February 2026 at Luleå University of Technology, where partners from across Europe gathered to begin their collaboration on advancing AI-enabled Sustainable Business Model Innovation (AI-SBMI).
Driving sustainable innovation through AI
AI4GreenBUS aims to strengthen competencies in AI-driven sustainable business development by combining artificial intelligence, digitalisation, and entrepreneurship. The initiative targets higher education institutions, vocational education and training (VET), and industry, with the goal of equipping learners and professionals with the skills needed for a rapidly evolving, sustainability-focused economy.
The project focuses on developing an innovative methodology for AI-supported sustainable business model innovation, alongside the creation of a 15 ECTS micro-credential programme. A central component of the initiative is the establishment of a Sustainable Business Metaverse Incubator, designed as a digital environment for learning and innovation. At the same time, the project seeks to strengthen collaboration between academia, VET, and industry, contributing to the development of future-ready skills and sustainable innovation across Europe.
A cross-European collaboration
The AI4GreenBUS consortium consists of ten partners from across Europe, including higher education institutions, vocational education and training providers, industry actors, and innovation organisations. The project is coordinated by Lapland University of Applied Sciences in Finland.
This cross-sectoral collaboration ensures strong connections between education, research, and industry, enabling the development of practical, real-world AI-driven business solutions.
Our contribution
At Luleå University of Technology, the project brings together an interdisciplinary team with expertise in artificial intelligence, entrepreneurship, and digital education. The university contributes in particular to the development of an AI-enabled student performance evaluation tool, designed to support learning and assessment within the micro-credential programme. This tool will also be integrated into the Metaverse Incubator, strengthening the project’s digital learning environment.
