Construction begins on Future Campus Luleå
Today, the first sod was cut for Future Campus Luleå at Luleå University of Technology. The ceremony marks the start of the long-term development of the campus area, with preparatory groundworks for the first new building now under way. The new buildings will gradually take shape over the coming years, and the entire project is scheduled for completion in 2034.
The initiative includes a new park environment and three new buildings designed to meet the university’s need for modern and flexible facilities for education, research and collaboration.
The first building to be constructed will provide a specially adapted environment for the university’s vibration-sensitive research equipment. The building will comprise approximately 4,500 square metres and is scheduled for completion in 2029. It will create favourable conditions for precision measurements, experiments and technological development, while also being adaptable to future research needs.
“It is exciting that we and Akademiska Hus are now beginning a new phase in the development of Future Campus Luleå. Although it will still be several years before we see the new buildings take shape, the preparatory groundworks are an important first step in the implementation phase. Since the process has been lengthy, it is particularly important that we look ahead and can envisage our new campus in Luleå once it is completed. Together, we are creating Sweden’s newest university campus, with future-proof, functional and attractive environments for our students and staff,” says Birgitta Bergvall-Kåreborn, Vice-Chancellor of Luleå University of Technology.
The development of Future Campus Luleå also includes two additional new buildings with space for study environments, laboratories and workplaces. One of the buildings is planned to comprise just over 49,000 square metres and is expected to be completed around the turn of the year 2031/2032. The other will comprise just under 23,000 square metres, with the aim of being completed in 2032/2033.
A new park will be created on the site where the E Building currently stands. The park will serve as an open meeting place for students, staff and visitors, while also functioning as a reserve area for future campus needs. According to the current timetable, the park is scheduled for completion in 2034.
Akademiska Hus estimates that it will invest approximately SEK 5.5 billion in the campus development. The realisation of the project will still require several further investment decisions and decisions by public authorities, including amendments to the detailed development plan and planning permission.
