Luleå University of Technology and the University of Oulu are strengthening their collaboration
Representatives from Luleå University of Technology and the University of Oulu recently gathered for a joint workshop focused on developing cooperation between the two institutions.
Throughout the day, research and activities from both universities were presented. The Department of Civil Engineering and Natural Resources presented research in construction management, fire engineering, waste management, water and wastewater engineering, and structural engineering. Participants also discussed opportunities for future collaboration in research, education, and joint projects.
“In structural engineering we have worked with Oulu for 40 years, in both education and research. With this event we wanted to broaden that collaboration to other areas of civil engineering, where our two universities see the same challenges and opportunities ahead. Among many interesting topics we looked at AI integration in research and education, and at defense and civil preparedness”. says Gabriel Sas, Professor and Head of Structural Engineering at Luleå University of Technology and host of the workshop.
The workshop was held as part of ongoing efforts to strengthen relations between the universities and identify areas where expertise and research environments complement each other.
“The exchange gives us the opportunity to learn from each other and create new opportunities for both research and education. By bringing together expertise from both universities, we can also tackle common societal challenges more effectively,” says Ulla Haverinen-Shaughnessy, professor and head of the Civil Engineering research unit at the University of Oulu.
The hope is that the meeting will lead to more joint initiatives and deeper collaboration in several strategically important areas for both universities.
