Several research fields improve their positions in international ranking
Luleå University of Technology has improved its rankings in several subject areas in this year’s QS World University Rankings by Subject. Among the fields advancing in the rankings are Mineral & Mining Engineering, Materials Science, Mechanical Engineering and Electrical & Electronic Engineering.
The QS World University Rankings by Subject compare universities worldwide across a broad range of academic disciplines. In this year’s ranking, Luleå University of Technology strengthened its position in several engineering and science fields.
Mineral & Mining Engineering is now ranked 30th in the world, compared with 48th last year. Materials Science also advanced significantly, moving from the 201–250 group to 138th place. Mechanical Engineering, Electrical & Electronic Engineering, and the broader field of Engineering & Technology also improved their positions.
“It is very encouraging to see the positive development in Mineral & Mining Engineering and Materials Science. These are two closely connected fields where we can see that long-term investments in research and collaboration are producing results. We are now aiming even higher through our engagement in WISE and the excellence cluster initiatives currently underway,” says Margareta Groth, Head of the Department of Engineering Sciences and Mathematics.
Strong international impact
Mineral & Mining Engineering is an area where Luleå University of Technology has a well-established international research profile. The research spans the entire value chain, from exploration and extraction to mineral processing, recycling and the sustainable use of critical raw materials. The field is also closely linked to the ongoing industrial transition in northern Sweden.

The QS ranking is based on factors including academic reputation, research impact and employer recognition, and is widely used as an international indicator of research and educational quality.
