International recognition for research on sustainable materials
Alberto Vomiero, Professor of Experimental Physics at Luleå University of Technology, has been elected an Academician of the World Academy of Ceramics. The appointment recognises his research on advanced ceramic materials for applications including solar energy and freshwater production.
The World Academy of Ceramics brings together researchers who have made internationally recognised contributions to the advancement of ceramics. New Academicians are selected through a rigorous scientific evaluation process, making the appointment a prestigious international recognition of research excellence in the field.
Alberto Vomiero is recognised in particular for his work on advanced ceramic materials for energy and environmental applications, as well as his commitment to educating and mentoring the next generation of researchers.
“This recognition from one of the leading international academies in the field means a great deal to me. Throughout my career, I have always sought to combine scientific advancement with the education of young researchers. To me, this is how academic research can contribute to the development of society,” says Alberto Vomiero.
Materials for clean energy and freshwater
An important part of Alberto Vomiero’s research focuses on how advanced materials can contribute to solutions for global sustainability challenges. His research includes materials for solar energy conversion and technologies that use solar energy to desalinate water and produce freshwater.
Much of this work has been carried out within Experimental Physics at Luleå University of Technology and, in recent years, through the UNESCO Chair Aid4GEA. The research is closely connected to several of the UN Sustainable Development Goals, particularly access to clean water and sustainable energy.
“Using advanced materials research to address challenges such as clean energy and access to water demonstrates the tangible impact this research can have. At the same time, it is essential to build knowledge for the future by educating the next generation of researchers in the field”, says Alberto Vomiero.
Recognition of the research environment
The appointment was announced during CIMTEC 2026, an international conference on modern materials and technologies held in Perugia, Italy.
For Alberto Vomiero, the recognition also reflects the research environment that has been developed at Luleå University of Technology.
“The appointment demonstrates that Luleå University of Technology provides an environment where we can conduct research that is internationally competitive. It is a recognition that I am very proud of, and one that also reflects the work of the many researchers and young colleagues around me,” says Alberto Vomiero.
