LTU Green Fuels Acquires 1,25 MW Electrolysis Demonstration Unit for Advanced Hydrogen Research
LTU Green Fuels, Luleå University of Technology’s world-class pilot plant for bio-syngas and green fuels, is expanding its research capabilities with the acquisition of a 1,25 MW electrolysis demonstration unit from Bosch. To formalize a planned research partnership, a Letter of Intent (LoI) has also been signed with Bosch to drive R&D in hydrogen and Power-to-X technologies.
"The investment marks an important step in the development of testing and research infrastructure for hydrogen production in the region. The electrolyzer will be used to establish an advanced test facility for evaluating electrolyzer systems under real operating conditions", says Fredrik Granberg, CEO at LTU Green Fuels.
At the core of the new testing facility is a 1,25 MW Hybrion PEM electrolysis stack delivered by Bosch. The custom infrastructure for the demonstrator is supplied by Moehwald GmbH, a global specialist in special-purpose machinery and a subsidiary of Bosch Manufacturing Solutions.
Germany’s major investment in hydrogen is central to transforming the steel and chemical industries and Bosch has countered by ramping up its industrialization expertise and manufacturing capacity for products and solutions along the entire hydrogen value chain. The delivery of the Bosch 1,25 MW electrolysis demonstration unit is scheduled for spring/summer 2027, and the system will become a central part of the H2-Labs research and demonstration project at LTU Green Fuels in Piteå, Sweden. The facility is designed to replicate the conditions of future large-scale electrolyzer plants planned for the steel industry in Norrbotten. The objective is to generate reliable and vendor-independent data that can support planning, operations, maintenance, and energy system integration for upcoming industrial-scale projects. Through the new electrolyzer, LTU Green Fuels becomes a leading actor in Sweden in industrial hydrogen advanced tests.
"Through our H2-Labs, we are creating a unique platform for research and testing of electrolysis systems at industrially relevant scale. The investment in the Bosch electrolyzer system enables us to conduct long-term testing and generate knowledge that will be important for the green industrial transition in northern Sweden", says Fredrik Granberg.
Special focus will be placed on transient behavior in electrolyzer operation and the challenges associated with operating in cold climate conditions. The long-term testing program will also contribute to the development of operational strategies that can support balancing of the electricity grid.
The H2-Labs project consists of two main parts: the construction of a test facility for electrolyzer systems, and the execution of tests related to the production of hydrogen and oxygen, as well as the recovery and utilization of waste heat generated in the process. H2-Labs is financed from EU: Just Transition Fund and Tillväxtverket, The Swedish Agency for Economic and Regional growth, Stiftelsen ETC and Baltiska fonden as well as the project partners LKAB, Smurfit Westrock and PiteEnergi.
