Researchers and industry came together as hydrogen initiative marked five years
Researchers, industry representatives and other stakeholders recently gathered at Luleå University of Technology for this year’s CH2ESS Research Days. Over two days, the latest hydrogen research took centre stage as the university’s major research and knowledge initiative in the field marked its fifth anniversary.
Today, the initiative involves around 150 researchers at the university and some 40 research projects in the field of hydrogen. Once a year, researchers and external partners come together at CH2ESS Research Days to share results, exchange knowledge and discuss how the research can be taken forward.
“This is an important opportunity for our researchers to share their latest results and discuss them with companies and other stakeholders. These meetings bring new perspectives, contacts and ideas that can help move the research forward,” says Cecilia Wallmark, Associate Professor of Energy Engineering and Executive Director of the Centre for Hydrogen Energy Systems Sweden (CH2ESS) at Luleå University of Technology.
From research to practical use
The breadth of this year’s programme reflected the many challenges that need to be addressed for hydrogen to be used on a larger scale. The presentations covered areas including energy, safety, materials, law, social sciences and underground hydrogen storage.
Innovation was a particular theme during this year’s Research Days. Participants worked together to explore how research results and ideas can be developed further and put into practice.
“Research creates new knowledge, but for it to make a real difference, the results also need to be taken further. We want to inspire participants to see the opportunities to turn ideas and research results into practical solutions,” says Cecilia Wallmark.
Five years of hydrogen research
This year’s CH2ESS Research Days also marked five years since Luleå University of Technology began bringing together and strengthening its research in the field of hydrogen. The initiative was driven in part by the industrial transition in northern Sweden and a rapidly growing need for knowledge about how hydrogen can be produced, stored and used safely and efficiently.
Over the past five years, the initiative has grown and developed through new research projects and collaborations in Sweden and internationally. At the same time, education and knowledge sharing have expanded, particularly in the field of hydrogen safety. The work continues to address new questions as hydrogen takes on a greater role in industry and society.
“It has been five very exciting years. We have managed to engage a large number of researchers and partners while building an extensive network in Sweden and internationally. We have come a long way, but there are still many exciting challenges and opportunities ahead of us,” says Cecilia Wallmark.
