About CAMM
The Centre of Advanced Mining and Metallurgy (CAMM) at Luleå University of Technology (LTU) is a leading research hub dedicated to the sustainable use of natural resources. Established in 2010 as LTU's strategic research area in this field, CAMM brings together cutting-edge science, strong industry collaboration, and a global network to support the green transition through responsible mining and metallurgy.
Our Mission and Vision
CAMM is dedicated to developing solutions that meet society’s growing need for minerals and metals using sustainable, resilient, and state-of-the-art methods. Our work focuses on locating, mining, processing, and extracting resources in environmentally responsible ways – without compromising the needs of future generations.
Research Across the Mining Value Chain
CAMM’s research spans the entire mining value chain, ensuring a holistic approach to sustainability and innovation. Our five core research areas are:
Exploration – efficient and responsible discovery of mineral resources;
Mining – environmentally friendly and safe mining practices;
Mineral Processing – improved resource efficiency and reduced waste;
Metallurgy – sustainable metals production and recycling;
Environment – minimising environmental impact and supporting mine closure.
CAMM is run in close collaboration with the Swedish metals research institute Swerim, specifically within the field of metallurgy, strengthening the link between academic research and industrial application.
Supporting the Green Transition
The green transition is reshaping industries worldwide, driving a rapidly increasing demand for metals and minerals essential to renewable energy systems, electric vehicles, and everyday technologies. Materials such as copper, zinc, lithium, steel alloys, and rare earth elements are fundamental to modern society.
The importance of these materials is reflected in the EU’s Critical Raw Materials Act, which aims to secure a sustainable, resilient, and circular supply of critical and strategic raw materials. CAMM actively supports these goals by advancing efficient, environmentally responsible exploration, mining, recycling, and resource management practices within Europe.
A Strong Global Network
CAMM operates within a strong Triple Helix platform, bringing together industry, academia, and governmental authorities. With Sweden – one of Europe’s most important mining nations – as its foundation, CAMM leverages state-of-the-art research infrastructure and global partnerships to drive innovation from idea to real-world impact.
Our projects address sustainability across the entire value chain, including exploration and resource characterisation, environmentally friendly mining, efficient extraction technologies, recycling of scrap and waste, and reduced waste generation through resource reuse.
Luleå University of Technology is also the only mining university in Sweden that is a member of Team Sweden Mining, strengthening its international collaboration and visibility within the global mining sector.
From Resarch to Impact
Close cooperation with industry and authorities enables CAMM to translate research into practice. Access to advanced laboratories, experimental facilities, field studies, and large-scale trials ensures that CAMM’s solutions are both scientifically robust and directly applicable – supporting a sustainable supply of critical metals and minerals for a green and resilient future.
