CRM-V Project Participants Visit SGU in Malå to Strengthen Collaboration and Field Knowledge
Researchers from CAMM recently visited the Geological Survey of Sweden (SGU) office in Malå for a day of knowledge exchange, geological discussions, and field observations. The group included Associate Professor Thomas Aiglsperger, Senior Lecturer Adrianus Halim, Senior Lecturer Olof Martinsson, and PhD students Aghata Viana and Ashkan Moaddel Haghigi
During the visit, Associate Professor Thomas Aiglsperger and the PhD students presented the CRM-V project (Critical Raw Materials in Västerbotten) to SGU geologist Sergio Castro. The presentation sparked an engaging discussion, with valuable feedback and suggestions that will help guide future work within the project.
The visit also included a session at SGU's drill core storage facility, where drill cores from the
Lappvattnet and Njuggträskliden nickel deposits were examined. Olof Martinsson provided an
overview of the geology and nickel mineralization, leading to productive discussions on the
geological characteristics of the deposits and their significance for critical raw materials research.
The day concluded with a visit to the former Lainejaur nickel mine. At the site, Martinsson
presented the geological setting, mining history, and style of mineralization. Participants examined remnants of the historic mining operation, including the entrance to the underground mine and ore stockpiles, and studied hand specimens containing nickel-bearing minerals. These field observations provided valuable insights into the distribution of mineralization and complemented the discussions held throughout the day.
The visit highlighted the importance of combining laboratory research, geological field observations, and collaboration with national geological organizations to advance research on critical raw materials.
