Biomining of rare earth elements towards a circular economy (BioREEMINE)

BioREEMINE explores the potential of novel proteins and peptides for their ability to extract and separate rare earth elements (REEs) under mild conditions.

We aim to develop a green, cost effective and highly efficient protein-based extraction process, where separation will be demonstrated using standard solutions containing a series of lanthanides and complex substrates such as processing, mining waste and ore deposits. The proteins will be immobilized with advanced methods to enable recovery and reuse. BioREEMINE will provide the basis for the development of green biosorbents and a highly resilient protein-based integrated system for green biohydrometallurgy.
