Meteor impact-controlled CRM mineralisation in Västerbotten – IMPACT
The Lycksele Ring with a diameter of 125 km is an enigmatic structure in Västerbotten that was proposed more than 40 years ago to represent the remnant of a meteor impact. This proposal has never been confirmed.
The proposed project will utilise detailed studies of graphite occurrences as well as advanced processing of geophysical data to provide information on the interpretation of the structure and its relation to mineralisation event of importance for the supply of critical raw materials. Previous studies have shown that graphite of biogenic origin can be transformed to diamond when exposed to meteor impacts, and one of the key components of the study is to search for such mineral transformations. Structural interpretations based on geophysical data will CAMM-CRM Seed Funding Application 2026, LTU-1805-2026 2 be performed with respect to mineral targeting and mineral system analyses. Results will be compared with the Sudbury structure.
