Forum for the Arctic and Antarctic

The aim of the Forum for the Arctic and Antarctic is to shape agendas for Arctic and Antarctic research in Sweden, in a dialogue between academia and societal actors. The forum is a joint effort between Luleå University of Technology, Umeå University and the Swedish Polar Research Secretariat.
The overarching theme is Raising the ambition of Swedish Polar Research. The program will include highlights of ongoing and emerging Arctic and Antarctic research, and panels in which researchers, authorities and actors from civil society discuss future needs and avenues for polar research in Sweden. The Forum for the Arctic and Antarctic will take place in Kiruna – a place in the epicenter of processes of change affecting the Arctic, from climate warming to green transition and global geopolitics.

Climate change remains as one of the most pressing challenges in the Arctic region. In this session, the Climate Impacts Research Centre at Umeå University presents ongoing research at Abisko research station, one of the platforms of The Swedish Polar Research Secretariat.

The European Arctic has been an important arena in global conflicts for hundreds of years. Because of increasing global geopolitical tensions connected to Russia’s war in Ukraine and the geo-political ambitions of the growing global power China, the Arctic has once again turned into a security hot spot. The panel, consisting of researchers and practitioners in the field of Arctic security, will discuss challenges and how academia and societal actors can work together to solve them.

The Fennoscandian Arctic is key to a green transition of the Swedish and European economies, but also poses challenges to Arctic communities and eco-systems. How can researchers and stakeholders cooperate to build a just green transition in the European Arctic? The panel, consisting of actors from academia, as well as regional/local actors, will discuss challenges and how to tackle them.
