ePilot
ePilot was an initiative of Luleå University of Technology, the Swedish Transport Administration and a large number of other railway stakeholders. The intention of the initiative was to create a platform for industry collaboration to improve operation and maintenance for the entire railway system.
ePilot was active from 2013 to 2020.
This platform was based on a concept of information logistics and data analysis for diagnostics and prognostics related to the operation and maintenance process. The concept is called eMaintenance and has been developed by the Luleå Railway Researcj Center (JVTC) at Luleå University of Technology.
Our vision was to enable a robust, reliable and digitalized railway system in Sweden that is attractive, safe and efficient.
Our goal was to integrate relevant research and development results into the railway system, thereby contributing to increased reliability, punctuality and sustainability of the railway, and also higher cost efficiency in operation and maintenance.
Under ePilot, 38 sub-projects have been implemented. Furthermore, ePilot has helped to develop the following two new concepts:
- Railway 4.0 - an overarching framework designed to facilitate the choice of concepts, strategies, technologies and methodologies aimed at developing the railway system, nationally and internationally.
- Testbed Railway - a platform for the implementation of rigorous, transparent and replicable testing of scientific theories, computational tools (e.g. Big Data Analytics) and new technologies.
Results
- Enabled a wider collaboration in which 51 stakeholders have actively participated
- Established a national platform for the retrieval, storage, integration and analysis of state and operational data
- Created a neutral innovation platform
- Established a process-oriented, cross-sectoral working method between organizations
- Created a greater understanding of challenges and opportunities affecting the implementation of innovations
- Increased the maturity of the industry regarding the opportunities brought by eMaintenance
- The leverage of invested funds is expected to constantly increase
- 105 ideas resulting in 38 implemented sub-projects
- Winner of the Strukton Innovation Award 2017
- IVA 100 list 2020
- Contributes to achieving the following impacts through the use of digital technologies and industrial AI for operations and maintenance:
- Improved robustness and punctuality of the rail transport system
- Increased cost-effectiveness of operations and maintenance.
