The Arctic Six
Luleå University of Technology, has entered into a collaboration to gather university resources in Sweden, Norway and Finland around the Arctic. A cooperation agreement on a “Joint Arctic Agenda” has been signed between Luleå University of Technology, UiT The Arctic University of Norway, Nord University, University of Lapland in Rovaniemi, University of Oulu and Umeå University. Together the universities form “The Arctic Six”.
Luleå University of Technology has an Arctic profile with many years of research linked to cold climate in areas such as civil engineering, renewable energy, mining and natural resource technology and health.
In all cases, the research takes place in interdisciplinary constellations. One example is mining technology, where research in areas such as economics, law, occupational science and health is broadening and strengthening traditional mining topics, in order to best address future challenges regarding sustainable mining in the Arctic.
The Arctic includes eight countries: Denmark (with Greenland and the Faroe Islands), Finland, Iceland, Canada, Norway, Russia, Sweden and the USA (Alaska). Both within the EU and globally, there is a strong desire to focus research in the Arctic on how natural resources such as oil, gas and minerals can be exploited in a sustainable way. The Arctic is a sensitive natural area of great importance to the whole world. With a growing climate crisis, research related to climate and renewable energy will be strengthened, and these are areas that are already in focus at Luleå University of Technology.
