WISE Research School visited Luleå University of Technology
Luleå University of Technology recently hosted a visit from the WISE Research School, where doctoral students and postdoctoral researchers gained insight into the university’s cutting-edge research in materials science and sustainable development. The visit was part of a three-day study trip to northern Sweden and included a lab tour as well as presentations on ongoing research at the university.
The WISE Research School is a central part of the Wallenberg Initiative Material Science for Sustainability and aims to educate future researchers in sustainable materials. During their visit to Luleå University of Technology, participants gained a broad overview of research related to the design and analysis of materials for new technologies, with a focus on raw materials from mining, wood, and recycling.
"It is fantastic to showcase the research we conduct here at Luleå University of Technology while also creating opportunities for future collaborations. The WISE Research School plays an important role in shaping the next generation of researchers in materials science for sustainability," says Andreas Larsson, professor of applied physics and deputy director of the research school within WISE.
Collaboration between research and industry
The study trip also included visits to several leading industrial companies and research institutes in the region, where participants gained insight into how research is applied in practice. During visits to Talga, SSAB, LKAB, Stegra, and SWERIM, they had the opportunity to see how materials science contributes to sustainable solutions across various sectors.
"A key aspect of WISE is to build bridges between research and industry, and here at the university, we see how our work can contribute to real solutions for global sustainability challenges," says Andreas Larsson.
Beyond the scientific program, participants also had the opportunity to experience the winter in Norrbotten, for example, by ice skating in central Luleå.

The WISE Research School provides a unique platform for doctoral students and postdoctoral researchers to develop the knowledge and skills required to achieve excellence in the interdisciplinary field of materials science for sustainability. The visit to Luleå University of Technology allowed participants to immerse themselves in current research while also establishing valuable connections for future collaborations.
The study trip was planned by Ida Kero, associate professor of materials engineering, who was primarily responsible for coordinating the company visits.
"We see great value in having WISE doctoral students visit us. It gives us an opportunity to showcase our research while also inspiring future collaborations between academia and industry," concludes Andreas Larsson.
