The power of the promissory organisation
In the north, huge investments are underway in “green” steel with the aim of radically reducing the emissions of greenhouse gases from the production of iron ore and steel. The investments promise economic development and attractive communities, but make great demands on the local communities that are expected to make the projects possible.
Against this background, organisations have been created solely with the aim of mobilising actors around the investments. These “promissory organisations” are the focus of this project. How are they organised, whose interests do they represent, what influence do they have, and how are they held accountable?
The project is based on case studies of Bodenxt (Boden) and AGON (Luleå), as well as shorter comparisons with organisations in Alaska, USA. The project runs between 2025 and 2027 and is financed by Handelsbanken's research foundations. The project is executed within the framework of Johan Sandström´s position as an Arctic Six Chair. Participating researchers are Johan Sandström (Luleå University of Technology) and Tommy Jensen (Stockholm University).
