UppLyst Winter road maintenance
Collisions have occurred in connection with tandem plowing, i.e. when two plow trucks each plow a lane diagonally in front of each other. The work of tandem plowing is perceived as risky, the plow trucks are poorly visible, speed is low, accessibility is impaired for road users and visibility is poor due to snow and sometimes darkness.
To improve safety, a research project is being carried out to test a new type of light sign. The signs are mounted on the back of the plow trucks and indicate with a flashing cross when it is not appropriate to overtake, and with a flashing yellow arrow when it is possible to overtake and then also on which side overtaking can take place. The tests are ongoing during the winter of 2010/2011 on two stretches of road along the E4, Hudiksvall-Gnarp and Jönköping-Gränna. LTU evaluates the behaviour of road users when the signs are used while testing new technology.
The project was funded by the Swedish Transport Administration
