The aim of VIVALDI is to develop an innovative, sustainable and cost-efficient biotechnological solution to convert off-gas emissions from bio-based Industries into CO2-based chemicals. In this way, the industry’s greenhouse gases emissions will not only be reduced, but will be used as a novel feedstock, lowering the dependency on fossil fuels import and the exploitation of key resources such as energy, raw material, freshwater and land. VIVALDI proposes an integrated solution allowing the conversion of biogenic CO2 into added-value organic acids, powered by ground-breaking advances in CO2 purification, electrochemical catalysis, microbiology, synthetic biology, and bioprocess engineering. In this way, the industry’s greenhouse gases emissions will not only be reduced, but also used as a novel feedstock for CO2-based chemicals, lowering the dependency on fossil fuels import and hence the exploitation of key resources such as energy, raw material, freshwater and land.
The Biochemical Process Engineering research group plays a pivotal role in the project by deploying their innovative chemo-enzymatic technology to treat and enrich industrial emissions. This technology will be used to deliver a highly pure CO2 compressed gas to the project partners, facilitating the production of high-value organic acids. Central to this approach is the integration of a CO2 absorbing solvent with the enzyme carbonic anhydrase, a hallmark of LTU's novel technology.
