The Swedish power and heating sector together with the energy sector have a large potential for carbon capture. In this project, we will investigate the potential of the enzyme carbonic anhydrase (CA) as a green, highly efficient, and selective promoter for accelerating CO2 capture in carbonate solutions. We will focus on the hot potassium carbonate (HPC) technology that is expected to be the most likely for industrial implementation. To apply CA in such “harsh” process (high temperatures >80oC), discovery of novel enzymes and their improvement towards ultra stable variants is necessary. We will develop a hybrid CA: carbonate solvent and validate it in a pilot trial. The results will aid into overcoming the slow kinetics of common solvents and boost CO2 removal efficiency to well beyond 95%, solving efficiency issues that impede the widespread implementation of post combustion carbon capture.
