Plastic Waste to BioTreasure: Empowering Microbial Cell Factories with iOmics
Project team: Alok Kumar Patel (project leader), Paul Christakopoulos, Iqra Mariam, Leonidas Matsakas, Ulrika Rova
Duration: 2024-2026
Funded by Kempestiftelserna
This project aims to establish an advanced and holistic production system for high-value nutraceuticals by microalgae conversion of industrial waste streams. Specifically, within the project we will establish a biological route for the production of functional proteins with nutritional and pharmaceutical value from microalgae and thraustochytrids using hydrophilic and hydrophobic waste stream. The project will strengthen the efforts for the establishment of a ‘microbial platform’ in Northern Sweden that will be devoted on research for the production of high-added value compounds from thraustochytrids and microalgae with nutraceutical and pharmaceutical value.
