Assessing and analyzing innovation needs and innovation strategies: Stage 1
The project developed a research-based framework for identifying and analyzing innovation needs in the construction sector. The results support more systematic and strategic innovation management among public clients.
Innovation is essential for addressing future challenges related to transport infrastructure, sustainability, safety, and productivity. However, public clients need a better understanding of their innovation needs before they can effectively stimulate innovation through procurement and project delivery.
This project aims to develop a research-based framework for identifying and analyzing innovation needs in the project-based construction industry. The study combined an extensive literature review with interviews involving representatives from Trafikverket, contractors, consultants, and other infrastructure stakeholders.
The results demonstrate that innovation extends far beyond new technologies and includes processes, organizational arrangements, collaboration, and business practices. The study identified several dimensions of innovation and highlighted the importance of systematic innovation management, stronger knowledge transfer, and greater focus on long-term societal benefits.
The developed framework provides a foundation for future research and practical work aimed at strengthening innovation and transformation capacity within the infrastructure sector.
