Innovation-oriented business models for sustainable construction projects
This project explores how contractors can adapt their business models to meet growing demands for sustainability and circularity. The focus is on creating value through resource efficiency, reuse, and collaboration.
The construction sector is undergoing a transition towards increased sustainability and circularity. To support this development, new business models are needed alongside new technical solutions.
This project aims to investigated how contractors can adapt their business models to meet growing client demands related to sustainability and circular economy principles. The research combined a literature review of circular business models with case studies of construction projects where circular initiatives had been implemented.
The results show that circular business models can create environmental, economic, and competitive value through resource efficiency, reuse of materials, and collaboration across the value chain. Three key success factors were identified: close collaboration between clients and contractors, strategic partnerships, and a strong focus on early project stages.
The project also highlights the challenges associated with an immature market for circular construction, where access to reused materials, electrified equipment, and supporting actors remains limited. The findings provide guidance for organisations seeking to strengthen innovation, circularity, and long-term value creation in construction projects.
