Sustainable industry development through measurement and monitoring of project quality
The project investigates how systematic measurement of project quality can improve performance in construction projects. Using the PQi model, the research identifies key drivers of quality, innovation, and sustainable project outcomes.
The construction industry faces major challenges related to sustainability, productivity, quality, and innovation. At the same time, there is a lack of established methods for systematically measuring project performance beyond traditional indicators such as time and cost.
This project was based on the Project Quality Index (PQi), a research-based model used to measure project conditions, working methods, work climate, and project performance. By analysing data from hundreds of construction projects, the research team investigated which factors are most important for successful project outcomes.
The results show that two factors are particularly important regardless of project type: a motivating work climate and effective project governance. Successful projects combine engagement, trust, and collaboration with clear structures, responsibilities, and follow-up procedures. The findings also demonstrate that project management needs to be adapted to project conditions, especially in large and complex projects where communication, problem-solving, and collaboration become increasingly important.
The project contributes new knowledge about how construction projects can be organized, managed, and monitored to improve quality, innovation, work environment, and long-term sustainability performance.
