6G SATCOM North
The project establishes a regional hub for 6G satellite networks, where research is combined with applied work to meet the needs of industry, the public sector, and society. Activities are carried out in close collaboration between academia, research institutes, and civil society.
Background
The standardisation of 6G has begun, and satellite systems are expected to become an integral part of this new mobile generation. National initiatives are underway to develop new communication solutions that combine terrestrial and space-based systems, enabling full coverage in sparsely populated areas and improved capacity for users.
The 6G SATCOM North project brings together two industries and their associated research and innovation environments in Upper Norrland: wireless communications and space technology systems, areas that have previously had limited synergy. The project integrates expertise from these fields in Upper Norrland and builds regional strength ahead of, and during, the development of future 6G satellite networks and systems.
Main funders
The European Regional Development Fund via the Swedish Agency for Economic and Regional Growth (Tillväxtverket), with co-funding from Region Norrbotten and the Municipality of Skellefteå.
