Re:Think Youth Lab is a collaborative project that aims to strengthen the ability of Luleå municipality and other actors to navigate the green transition by engaging young people in speculative design processes.
The focus is on exploring future scenarios for Luleå in 2040 that highlight young people's perspectives and strengthen social inclusion, sustainability and attractive living environments in this societal transformation.
The project addresses the historical neo-industrialisation in Norrbotten and Västerbotten, where large investments in green industries are reshaping the region. The aim is to ensure that social justice and sustainability are not overlooked in this rapid development. Through speculative design, three future scenarios will be visualised in workshops and an interactive exhibition will be created to create dialogue between young people, residents and decision-makers.
Supported by the EU Green Deal and national guidelines such as the Convention on the Rights of the Child, the project uses inclusive design methods to highlight the needs and visions of young people. This is done through workshops in three selected locations in Luleå – the city center, the Porsön residential area and the rural village of Råneå – which reflect different types of living environments.
In the project, we aim to develop methods for inclusive urban development with a focus on social sustainability, engage young people and strengthen their influence over future decisions, and create an interactive exhibition that visualises future scenarios and promotes dialogues.
Expected results are a better understanding of youth perspectives in urban planning, a practical methodological tool for working with inclusion and co-creation that can be applied nationally, and an increased involvement of residents and decision-makers in sustainable community development.
Re:Think Youth Lab is a unique opportunity to explore how the green transition can be socially inclusive and create a future-proof Luleå where everyone can feel included.
