OXYFLUID: Fluidized-bed oxy-fuel combustion of low-grade biomass for efficient BECCS and BECCU
Biomass combustion with carbon capture and storage/utilization (BECCS/U) can deliver negative CO2 emissions from industrial boilers and district heating/CHP in Sweden. Oxy-fuel fluidized bed combustion (OF-FBC) is a promising route: oxy-fuel produces highly concentrated CO2 which facilitates capture, while FBC enables efficient conversion of low-grade biomass. Deployment of OF-FBC is associated with challenges related to combustion and ash chemistry, plant performance and retrofitting existing boilers. This project will generate essential knowledge to enable the implementation of BECCS/U using oxy-fuel or oxygen-enriched FBC of low-grade biomass through (i) detailed CFD and process-level modelling, (ii) construction and operation of a 20 kW FB reactor to experimentally study OF-FBC, (iii) simulation of a full-scale industrial oxy-fuel FBC unit, and (iv) assessment of technology diffusion under different policies, including private and social costs and CO2 mitigation potential.
