The assessment of Swedish upper secondary school students´ English vocabulary
The assessment of Swedish upper secondary school students’ written English vocabulary production in relation to word frequencies and the national tests is an unexplored area of research.
Christian Holmberg Sjöling is a PhD student in English and Education and his project is concerned with this topic. The first part of his thesis investigates what word frequencies that are present in the example texts that are part of the instructions for assessment of the national tests in Swedish upper secondary school for the courses English 5 and 6 and how they relate to different grades. In the second part of the project, Christian is using a new corpus (Swedish Learner English Corpus) to study how the written English vocabulary production of Swedish upper secondary school students relate to the aforementioned word frequencies and instructions for assessment. Lastly, he will investigate how these instructions for assessment are applied by active teachers and attempt to discern how the instructions were constructed.
