The Cloudberry (Hjortron)
The cloudberry (Rubus chamaemorus) is a species deeply rooted in the northern landscape—thriving only in pristine, water-rich environments such as wetlands, peat bogs, and tundra meadows. Its survival depends on clean, balanced hydrological conditions where water regulates temperature, nourishes the soil, and sustains biodiversity. In Northern Sweden, the cloudberry is a delicacy also called "the gold of Norrland".
This close connection between the cloudberry and water mirrors the theme of the 9th IAHR Europe Congress: “Innovating Hydro-Environment Engineering for a Sustainable Future – Arctic Waters and Beyond”. Just as the cloudberry reflects harmony between water, land, and climate, the Congress aims to foster innovation that protects and restores aquatic environments under changing conditions. The cloudberry thus becomes a fitting emblem—rooted in the Arctic, shaped by water, and flourishing through sustainable balance.
