Managers as Employees: The Organizational and Social Work Environment for Front-Line Managers
The project examines the organisational and social work environment for construction managers working on-site in the Swedish construction industry.

Construction managers play a central role in coordinating complex construction projects, managing time constraints, coordinating contractors, and simultaneously ensuring a safe and healthy work environment on the construction site. Despite the significant responsibilities of the role, there is limited research on construction managers’ own work situations and how demands, responsibilities, control, and social support affect their work environment and health. The project therefore focuses on how managers working closely with production perceive their workload, their scope for action, and the organizational conditions that shape their daily lives.
The study is based on literature reviews, interviews, workplace studies, and analyses of both completed and ongoing construction projects. The project is being carried out in close collaboration with the industry association Byggföretagen and the trade union Ledarna, and aims to develop practical tools and recommendations to strengthen construction managers’ organisational and social work environments.
