Christmas greetings from the FINAST project!
As 2025 comes to an end, we in the FINAST project would like to take this opportunity to extend a warm thank you to all our partners, financiers and collaborators. Together, we have contributed to developing the sustainable steel production of the future and strengthened Luleå University of Technology's position in the steel field.
2025 - a summary review
2025 – A Summary Review
- During 2025, the project has:
- Engaged 54 participants from academia, research institutes, and industry who have collaborated on research and development of carbon-neutral steel
- Organized three international seminars on fossil-free steel in collaboration with the University of Oulu, with a total of 109 participants
- Carried out study visits to SSAB Raahe and Outokumpu Tornio
- Deepened collaboration with SSAB and other industrial partners
- Produced new research findings that contribute to the long-term goals of the project
A central activity during the year has been our webinar series on the future fossil-free steel industry, where researchers and industry representatives shared insights on topics ranging from process innovations to sustainability challenges and technological development. The series has attracted significant attention and has become an important platform for knowledge dissemination and dialogue.
If you missed any of the webinars, or would like to revisit a particular session, all webinars are available here:
During 2025, a mid-term evaluation of the project was carried out by Oxford Research. The conclusion is that the ongoing activities are highly relevant and meet the needs of both industry and academia. The project has an efficient internal organization, and the short-term effects have been achieved through, for example, results delivered by all sub-projects, long-term knowledge building, and knowledge transfer to the project’s stakeholders.
FINAST is one of the largest projects within the Just Transition Fund in Norrbotten, covering several emerging segments of the steel value chain for carbon-neutral steel production. Through our work, we directly contribute to Sweden’s and Europe’s green transition while strengthening the region’s innovative capacity and industrial competitiveness.
We would like to thank you for an inspiring and productive year, and we look forward to continuing our work together in 2026.
Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!
