Surface Treatment Characterization
Patricio Piantanida has visited the Engineering Materials Science group at Tampere University for a collaborative work involving the surface treatment of two SSAB steels by ultrasonic nanocrystal surface modification (UNSM).
Ultrasonic nanocrystal surface modification
UNSM is an energy-efficient, advanced surface treatment that significantly improves the tribological and mechanical properties of steel sheets. By inducing a gradient nanostructured layer with compressive residual stresses, it enhances fatigue strength, wear resistance, hardness, and corrosion performance, thereby extending service life and supporting steel sustainability.
The experiments conducted during the visit will provide deeper insights into the mechanisms driving the formation of the nanostructured layer. Understanding these microstructural changes is essential for linking them to improved steel performance and guiding the adoption of this technology within the steel value chain.
