ISIJ-VDEh-Jernkontoret Joint Symposium on Ironmaking and Steelmaking
This joint symposium is organised every third year as a forum for networking and exchange hosted by the steel industry organisations of the Sweden, Japan and Germany. Presentations from academic and industrial presenters were held at Tohoku University in Sendai, Japan, April 2026. With research grants from “Stiftelsen de Geerska fonden”, FINAST PhD candidate Erland Nylund was part of the Swedish contingent, presenting findings related to the interplay between slag composition and biocarbon quality requirements in EAF steelmaking.
Two days of academic presentations were followed by another two days of industrial and academic study visits, including to Nippon and Godo Steel in Chiba, as well as the NanoTerasu synchrotron facility in Senday.
Separate from the symposium, Erland also made a study visit to Japan’s National Institute for Environmental Science (NIES) in Tsukuba, joining a small seminar hosted by the Material Cycles Division. Erland made a presentation about the Swedish iron and scrap steel supply system and the drastic changes it is facing.
