New head of division wants to strengthen the role of the subject in the green transition
Machine elements represent a key research environment at Luleå University of Technology, where work contributes to sustainable and energy-efficient solutions within the industry. Pär Marklund, professor of machine elements, has recently assumed the role of Head of Division and looks forward to advancing research in a time when technology and sustainability go hand in hand.
"I have been working in the department since 2004 when I started my PhD in the field of machine elements, and I saw this as an opportunity to work more broadly with issues related to research and education," says Pär Marklund, newly appointed Head of Division and Professor of Machine Elements at Luleå University of Technology.
He considers it particularly important to ensure that research remains highly relevant and can meet future demands. Research in machine elements is crucial for many of the technical solutions required for the green transition. The development of more energy-efficient and sustainable machine systems is in focus, and the field has a significant impact on areas such as wind and hydropower, electrified vehicles, and hydrogen compressors.
"The role of machine elements in reducing friction losses and increasing the efficiency and lifespan of machine components is incredibly important—perhaps more so now than ever before," says Pär Marklund.
AI and digitalization drive technological development
Another important aspect of research, which Pär Marklund identifies as particularly significant, is digitalization and the increasing use of AI. This technology creates new opportunities for condition monitoring of machines, which can improve performance and extend the lifespan of machine systems. By integrating AI into new monitoring systems, machines can operate more efficiently and with greater optimization.
"New AI tools will enable the development of better components and materials in the future, which in turn will further drive technological progress. It is crucial that we remain at the forefront in this area," says Pär Marklund.
Looking ahead, he sees both opportunities and challenges for the research field. Machine systems linked to the green transition bring new demands and challenges that must be addressed, but research in machine elements is prepared to meet them.
"As society evolves, new challenges will arise. I envision an exciting future where we can contribute to sustainable development through research and innovation. It is important that we strengthen our position as a leading research environment," concludes Pär Marklund.
