Cold and hot bathing (sauna bathing) – a pathway to better health?
Sauna bathing is an ancient tradition that has played an important role in human cultural, social and medical development. Its impact on human health initially related primarily to improved hygiene, and later research has demonstrated effects comparable to those seen with physical activity.
Research on sauna bathing and health examines how regular sauna use affects our health, for example through improved sleep, lower blood pressure and enhanced wellbeing. Sauna bathing has traditionally been strongly rooted in Nordic culture and is now being studied systematically for its potential health benefits. The research also explores what motivates people to use saunas and whether there are any differences between women and men regarding their motivations and the health effects of sauna bathing. The project further investigates subjective experiences of cold-water bathing, such as winter swimming, in relation to stress reduction and wellbeing.
