Safewards - Supporting recovery in psychiatric inpatient care?
Safewards is an explanatory model and intervention program developed in the United Kingdom, aimed at reducing the use of coercive measures in inpatient psychiatric care. The model itself has evolved and increasingly addresses issues of quality and meaning in care in a broader sense. Consequently, questions regarding the model's significance in relation to other aspects of inpatient psychiatric care have gained greater relevance and importance.
One such question is the potential of Safewards to contribute to the development of person-centered and inclusive inpatient psychiatric care by building on the recovery model. This model encompasses principles, values, and practices that emphasize the importance of individuals taking an active role in their own recovery and highlight the significance of connectedness, hope, identity, meaning, and empowerment. The model is now gaining traction in Sweden, where Safewards is being implemented in eight regions, including Region Norrbotten, with an additional five regions having received an initial introduction to the model.
Within the Safewards Sweden project, several research studies are being conducted to address questions about how the introduction of Safewards impacts the prevalence of threats, violence, and coercive measures in Swedish inpatient psychiatric care, as well as which implementation strategies are most effective. In the described project, we aim to focus on Safewards' potential to contribute to the development of person-centered and inclusive care that supports recovery.
