Work packages

The research is organized into four Work Packages (WPs) which will be applied to both case studies in four consecutive steps over a period of four years. Each WP applies specific methods and material as outlined below.

Work package 1: TK and sustainability in Sámi land use and reindeer herding

Research leaders: Kajsa Kuoljok & Susan Baker

Research Question: What are the ways in which TK is employed in Sámi land use, reindeer herding and pathways to sustainability?

Methods: Ethnographic fieldwork including informal interviews, knowledge sharing- and scenario building workshops, storytelling

Outputs: 2 scientific publications and knowledge dissemination outputs targeting the Sámi community. Templates and maps of TK to WP 2-4

Work package 2: Intersecting knowledge systems and epistemic justice in mining permitting

Research leader: Karin Beland Lindahl

Research Question: How and in what ways is TK included or excluded in specific mining permitting processes, and how does Indigenous Sámi TK intersect with Western science in such processes?

Methods: Qualitative analysis of legal/policy documents and documentation of mining permitting, supplementary interviews/focus groups with Sámi RHCs, companies and/or authorities

Outputs: 2 scientific publications and assessment of epistemic justice/injustice for WP 3-4

Work package 3: Tools and governance for sustainability and justice

Research leaders: Tobias Bauer & Christina Allard

Research Question: How can epistemic justice contribute to bridging Indigenous TK and Western science in mining permitting, and how can just bridging and collaboration be institutionalized and promoted in practice?

Methods: Focus groups and participatory mapping methods to design and explore potential of knowledge bridging- (e.g. dP-GIS/Q-GIS) and collaborative planning tools

Outputs: 2 scientific publications, collaborative planning tools, maps to support Sámi RHCs documentation and knowledge exchange. Input to WP 4

Work package 4: Synthesis and collaborative learning

Research leaders: Karin Beland Lindahl and all researchers involved in the project

Methods: Synthesis, communication, dissemination of research results. Round Tables with key actors. 

Outputs: 1 scientific publication, Policy brief and -recommendations, final conference at Ájtte Museum
