WISE guest Professor presents research on sustainable composite materials
Christina Scheffler, WISE Guest Professor at Luleå University of Technology, recently presented her research on polymeric composite materials. Her work focuses on fiber-reinforced polymer and concrete composites, fiber recycling, and surface treatments—key areas for developing more sustainable materials. As part of the Wallenberg Initiative Materials Science for Sustainability (WISE), her research contributes to innovative material solutions for a more sustainable future.
During the lecture, she provided insights into one of her ongoing projects aimed at the use of recycled carbon fibers for a second life in composite materials. With extensive experience in the field, she has led numerous research collaborations at the Leibniz Institute for Polymer Research in Dresden and the Technical University of Dresden.
Her work includes optimizing fiber-reinforced materials through advanced surface treatments and hybrid yarn technologies. By understanding how fibers and polymer matrices interact, she aims to create materials that are not only stronger but also more recyclable—an important step toward more sustainable construction and manufacturing.
Joint research focus
Scheffler highlighted the importance of her collaboration with the research subject Polymeric Composite Materials at Luleå University of Technology, emphasizing how joint efforts can accelerate the development of innovative and sustainable material solutions.
"Our joint research focus on sustainable materials for lightweight and high-performance composite materials is valuable and inspiring to find new material solutions for the future with reduced environmental footprint."

New knowledge for future researchers and engineers
The audience also had the opportunity to hear from Andrea Bercini Martins, a Postdoc under Scheffler’s supervision, working on glass fiber spinning and composite interphase characterization.
As a WISE Guest Professor since August 2023, Scheffler plays a key role in strengthening Luleå University of Technology’s research in polymeric composite materials. Her work contributes to advancing knowledge and innovation in fiber technology and sustainable materials, supporting the development of stronger, lighter, and more environmentally friendly materials for industry.
