Psychology programme and planned clinic featured by SVT
The high level of interest in the Psychology Programme at Luleå University of Technology and plans for an integrated psychology clinic have been featured by SVT Nyheter Norrbotten. The reports include interviews with Jessica Körning-Ljungberg, Professor and Head of Subject in Psychology, and psychology student Christian Lundgren.
The first cohort began the Psychology Programme at Luleå University of Technology in autumn 2025. Around 1,200 people applied to the programme in both the first and second admissions rounds, making it the university’s most sought-after programme.
Christian Lundgren is now in his second year of the programme. He is from Piteå and hopes to work as a psychologist and researcher within the Swedish Armed Forces in the future.
“There is a great need for psychologists in Norrbotten, not only in healthcare but also in industry and the Swedish Armed Forces,” says Christian Lundgren.
Planned clinic will bring education and research together
As part of the Psychology Programme, Luleå University of Technology is establishing a clinic that is expected to be ready by autumn 2028. Under the supervision of registered psychologists and psychotherapists, students will meet patients and apply their knowledge in practice. The clinic will also provide opportunities for research.
Students will be able to provide therapy both in person and online. The focus on digital psychology will equip them with knowledge that can help meet the need for psychological treatment in places where access to psychologists is limited.
“What will distinguish us from other psychology programmes in Sweden is our strong focus on digital psychology,” says Jessica Körning-Ljungberg, Professor and Head of Subject in Psychology at Luleå University of Technology.
The clinic will receive people experiencing mild to moderate mental health difficulties. Under supervision, students will gain practical experience while more people will be able to access psychological treatment. The programme is also intended to help increase the number of psychologists in Norrbotten in the longer term.
