CO2-NiCE Material testing has begun
The steel industry faces a major challenge: recycling often means compromising the properties of steel due to tramp elements, which are elements that cannot be sorted out of scrap before it is remelted and that can contaminate the steel. Right now, LTU is collaborating with the steel industry to keep industry and research closely connected, and to develop a process where scrap-based steel can be reintroduced into the market and into the automotive industry without compromising the mechanical performance.
Initial tests
Our researchers at LTU have now received samples from the steel industry, including one scrap-based experimental blend and one baseline material. The aim is to recreate the properties of the baseline material in a blend that can be produced using scrap instead of raw iron. The initial steps of the characterization will focus on microscale properties, specifically Vicker hardness and nailing down the proper etching conditions so that that the microstructure can be properly examined.
Once this characterization is complete, the bulk properties will be investigated through tensile testing, three-point bending, and analysis of the fracture-mechanical response of the material. With this battery of tests, we hope to identify the exact differences between the materials and recommend steps to improve the characteristics of the recycled steel. This brings us one step closer to the future of a steel industry where high-performance steel is fully recyclable.
