Kiruna City – Mining movements induced damage on existing buildings
This process causes horizontal and vertical ground displacements that can prompt the occurrence of structural damage in buildings as they are not usually designed to accommodate such displacements. This damage, first noticed in the form of cracks, can progressively increase and lead to unreversible structural deterioration. In this project, the development of a methodology aimed to quantify and predict the structural damage caused by mining induced movements is developed and applied for the case of Kiruna City.
Aim & Objectives
The aim of this project is to evaluate the influence of mining movements on existing buildings in Kiruna and develop a priority route for the replacement of the buildings.
The objective of the project in its first phase is to characterize the building stock of the city through a digitalized platform including physical attributes and structural characteristics of the buildings.
The project is financed by LKAB. Researchers: Gabriel Sas, Gustav Jansson, Jaime Gonzalez och Chao Wang
